Honey goes political…bet you didn’t see this coming!
You may not know that Honey Agency has designed and developed many awesome contests and sweepstakes for our wine/spirits clients but our own state requires that Californians are kept from entering.
Ever wonder why?
The reason is simple. Even though Californians purchase more alcohol than any other state (nearly $22 billion last year), California is one of the few states that forbids alcohol producers and sellers from allowing California residents to participate in their contests and sweepstakes. Hopefully that will change very soon.
Last week, the California legislature passed SB778 which would change the law and allow California residents to play along with the rest of the country. However, the Bill has one more hurdle to clear before it becomes law: Governor Jerry Brown still needs to sign it.
SB778, led by Wine Institute, the bill’s sponsor, and Senator Alex Padilla (D-San Fernando Valley), the bill’s author, argued that California was at a competitive disadvantage by being one of the only states in the country that did not allow alcohol sweepstakes and contests. California residents are ambassadors of some of the finest wines, beers and spirits in the world. California has one of the most social savvy populations in the world. California farmers produce the finest harvests in the world.
We hope that Governor Brown understands the importance of permitting California residents to participate in these campaigns bringing California’s residents closer to the bountiful products and heritage of our great state.
Honey Agency looks forward to the day we can develop these fun contests that will finally allow CA residents to play along. Cheers!
Special thanks to Christopher C. Phillips, Attorney for his due diligence and research on this bill.
