New Website: Bertolino Insurance Agency

As a Sacramento-based company, we have the opportunity to work with some fantastic local, small businesses that need a new logo, help with social media or a complete website overhaul. One of our most recent website projects was that of Bertolino Insurance Agency.

As a die-hard University of Tennessee fan, President Joe Bertolino had one requirement – incorporate Tennessee orange. You can find that iconic orange and its complimentary blues make a statement throughout their website, and show that this company means serious business. Joe’s wife and office manager, Christy, wanted to make sure the site exuded the personality and culture of this customer service oriented business.

Give their new website a tour and share the love on Facebook, too!

You’ll also find their sister site, CIG Capitol City Insurance Center, received a facelift, too. Click here to see more.

Federico Rebrand

Have we ever mentioned how much we love to “honey-fy” brands? That includes working on projects for some of our dearest, long-term clients. We recently took on the rebrand of Federico, formerly known as Federico Beauty Institute, in anticipation of the school’s brand new, 20,000+-square-foot expansion. The Federico family has owned and operated this prestigious facility for three generations. Just put three Italian brothers and their father in the rebrand mix, and we have to admit, though our work was cut out for us, we’re pretty stinkin’ proud to have landed on a logo that they (and we!) all love.

The new logo retains the basic color palette of the previous version, but with an update to the orange, making it brighter and less pastel. The exclamation point has previously been an integral brand element, so we incorporated it in the redesign. You can see it in the crossbar of the ‘f’.

The ‘f’ is adapted from an original, hand-drawn Federico mark from the 1950s (above left), based on the classic pompadour hairstyle. The new mark is bold enough to stand on its own, and will likely be used more frequently in this context as the rebrand becomes more recognizable.

While the horizontal version of the logo is the standard usage, a vertical lock-up was created to allow for maximum flexibility.

Federico has several specialty programs under the main school: Advanced Education, Cosmetology, Esthetics, and now, Barbering. Each program has its own voice and mini-identity to differentiate it while supporting the main brand.

Federico is located at 1515 Sports Drive in Sacramento. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram.

B.O.B.: Beautiful Creatures

Synopsis

This week’s first post is focused on the film, Beautiful Creatures; a supernatural love story about a boy looking to escape his small-town, Southern life, and a mysterious new girl who arrives at his school. Instead of focusing on the overall plot and cinematography of the movie, this review will examine the artistry and art direction of the film, focusing on music, costumes, set design, special effects, and typography.

Music
The soundtrack of the film is quite varied but effective in expressing the different moods and situations throughout the movie. The songs range from classical atmospheric ballads to country and folk with a modern twist. The composer utilizes classical string instruments to effectively give certain parts of the movie an eerie feel. And of course, the use of the banjo ties in with the setting and environment quite well.

Costumes
Many of the characters’ attire are appropriate for the film, with “normal people” in jeans, T-shirts and skirts, etc. Though the shift in costuming is seen with Lena, the female protagonist, and her family, who are all casters (witches), who wear more formal attire, such as suits and ties and fancy gowns. The casters are portrayed as beautiful creatures and not your stereotypical gnarly witch. The costumes were beautiful and almost over-the-top, but didn’t detract from the movie; it almost gave an old-time Southern feel, which in that respect worked fairly well.

Set Design
I’m not entirely sure where the film was shot, though the environment, buildings and flora were very believable in giving you the impression that the story is taking place somewhere in the South, with neoclassical architectural buildings covered with moss and old, twisted trees that seem to date back to the colonial times. The set design gets my approval too.

Special Effects
The special effects weren’t great, but it was neither awful. From the occasional changing of eye color to a spinning table at a family dinner, the effects seemed satisfactory, nothing over the top. Maybe with a larger budget, the effects can be more polished but it was successful in what it had to do for the film.

Typography
The typography for the Beautiful Creatures identity is beautiful, with an ornate and organic feel. The logo is reminiscent of tree branches, which is a theme throughout the movie. It also has a feminine quality, which plays on the image of the strong female characters seen throughout the movie. There is a sequence at the end of the movie that is worth seeing from a designer’s standpoint, where the type looks as though it is sprouting vines and branches, which is visually compelling.

Overall Impression

Overall, Beautiful Creatures gets a Honey “Approved” stamp for its art direction, which I found to be pretty solid. It can be refined a little but overall effective and successful.

If you are looking for a full review of Beautiful Creatures, along with other various films that are currently playing (A Good Day to Die Hard, Safe Haven), you can read more on Tony Sheppard’s popular reviews at Sacramento Press!

The perfect cocktail to ring in 2013

Nothing says celebration like a hand-crafted cocktail! This year, the Hive enlisted the help of a local distiller to make our holiday gift – The Nectar. The honey infused vodka is delicious on its own served over ice and even better in our Honey Badger cocktail!

Honey Badger Cocktail

1 oz The Nectar Vodka
1 oz St-Germain
3 oz chilled Prosecco
1 orange slice

Pour ingredients into a chilled fluted wine glass and stir lightly. Squeeze orange slice and pop in as a garnish. Raise a glass and toast to the success of 2012 and to more in 2013!

From our hive to your home, Happy New Year!

A Very Honey Holiday

Last Thursday, the Honey Bees ventured out on their 2012 holiday excursion – this time to the Sonoma Valley. With a full (and uber comfy) bus, compliments of Napa Valley Tours & Transportation, we departed Sacramento and headed to VJB Vineyards & Cellars for our first round of wine tasting – what an experience! After tasting some delicious wines, we made our way to Benziger Family Vineyards where Erinn Benziger treated us to a tour of the vineyard and wine cave, followed by a private tasting of amazing wines.

By nightfall, the Hive made its way to Glen Ellen Star restaurant for what could easily be called one of the best meals – ever! We managed to fit a fun-filled, white elephant gift-exchange into the evening, complete with the perfect sampling of homemade Egg Nog, Pumpkin, and Candy Cane ice cream. We topped the trip off at the historic Jack London Lodge with a couple mean games of pool (Paul isn’t just a bee, he’s a shark).

Delicious wines, outstanding food and service, and amazing company – this truly was a holiday to remember. Cheers to you and yours this holiday season!

The Hive that Followed the Chef

Recently, we surprised Honey Agency’s Queen Bees, Rebecca and Meghan, with a double birthday treat: a special lunch outing at Grange Restaurant in downtown Sacramento called “Follow the Chef.”

On a beautiful (and warm) October day, the Hive met up at Grange, where we were lead across the street by Executive Chef Oliver Ridgeway to the local farmers’ market at Cesar Chavez Park. We “followed” him, met vendors, learned about the seasonal produce and even received many helpful, off-the-cuff tips on delicious ways to prepare it.

After purchasing a few items to take home, the group headed back to Grange where we enjoyed delicious wine pairings and hand-crafted blackberry-clove spritzers (yum!). Following an entertaining conversation with Chef Oliver’s dad (who joined our little group from England, no less), we indulged in our three-course meal prepared by Chef Oliver himself.

The day was truly an amazing treat and we can’t wait for the opportunity to come again next year! Take a look at our fun-filled afternoon outside the Hive.

A Win for California

Honey goes political…bet you didn’t see this coming!

SB778 Passes Legislature

You may not know that Honey Agency has designed and developed many awesome contests and sweepstakes for our wine/spirits clients but our own state requires that Californians are kept from entering.

Ever wonder why?

The reason is simple. Even though Californians purchase more alcohol than any other state (nearly $22 billion last year), California is one of the few states that forbids alcohol producers and sellers from allowing California residents to participate in their contests and sweepstakes. Hopefully that will change very soon.

Last week, the California legislature passed SB778 which would change the law and allow California residents to play along with the rest of the country. However, the Bill has one more hurdle to clear before it becomes law: Governor Jerry Brown still needs to sign it.

SB778, led by Wine Institute, the bill’s sponsor, and Senator Alex Padilla (D-San Fernando Valley), the bill’s author, argued that California was at a competitive disadvantage by being one of the only states in the country that did not allow alcohol sweepstakes and contests. California residents are ambassadors of some of the finest wines, beers and spirits in the world. California has one of the most social savvy populations in the world. California farmers produce the finest harvests in the world.

We hope that Governor Brown understands the importance of permitting California residents to participate in these campaigns bringing California’s residents closer to the bountiful products and heritage of our great state.

Honey Agency looks forward to the day we can develop these fun contests that will finally allow CA residents to play along. Cheers!

Learn more about the bill here and here.

Special thanks to Christopher C. Phillips, Attorney for his due diligence and research on this bill.

Our Intern Bee Leaves the Hive

I’m a firm believer in internships. During college, I completed three internships ranging from newsroom assistant to event marketing. It was the knowledge and experience I gained during my internships, that led me to my future career and helped me discover my passion for marketing. It’s only fitting that I have the opportunity to manage the internship program at Honey Agency and help college students gain real-world experience. It’s been our pleasure to welcome students who want to learn more about marketing, social media, design or development. Recently, Robert Heally (aka Tone or Tony) joined our team during his last quarter at U.C. Davis. Tony was a tremendous help to our agency and learned a lot in the process. He is now off to Southern California and has a bright future ahead of him.

Tony sent us a recap about his time at Honey (read below):

This quarter, I had the privilege of being the Marketing Intern with the Honey Agency. As the Marketing Intern, my duties were to assist the marketing manager with everything from managing social media campaigns for both the agency and its’ clients, conduct competitor analyses, and help with the day-to-day tasks. Having recently decided I want to go into the marketing field after I graduate, the knowledge I gained from working with Honey Agency is invaluable, and I’m grateful for the experience.

Being that there are always a number of different projects at once, I was able to gain experience in everything from social media contests to research and analysis. Having no previous marketing experience, these projects taught me the different strategies businesses use to market to their customers. One of my favorite projects from the internship was learning to wireframe websites. It’s amazing to see how the designers and developers create such masterpieces from a basic wireframe.

I will walk away from this internship with a lot of marketing experience that will be directly applicable to the real world. I’ve learned that marketing is an ever-changing business, and that in order to be successful, you always need to keep up with the latest. Another thing I learned was how to prioritize my work to meet deadlines. The last thing I’ll walk away with is a sense of what marketing means today. With the rise of social media, marketing is shifting from television and print towards social media. Focus is going to be on Facebook, Twitter, and mobile. Having worked with an agency that specializes in social media marketing, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work with them.

Best wishes to our Intern Bee!

A Star is Born

The past few months we have been immersed in launching a new restaurant brand and website for Glen Ellen Star, opening in the Sonoma Wine Country. This has been a perfect fit for us–as self-described foodies we have been able to unfold the dream of a seasoned chef, Ari, and his wine pedigreed wife, Erinn. Erinn and Meghan have been friends for years growing up together in Sonoma Valley and connecting through our businesses has been a labor of love.

Logo Design, Website Design, and Website Development by Honey Agency

Resembling a quaint farmhouse and invoking the rustic feeling of California wine country, Glen Ellen Star is a taste of both regional and international flavors. The restaurant features wood-fired cooking, all local ingredients from organic farms, homemade ice cream, and if you so desire, a custom-ordered whole lamb for 18 people!

Ari has worked at New York’s Restaurant Daniel, Picholine, and Paul Liebrandt’s Corton, where he served as Chef de Cuisine. He also had a long stint working his magic at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA.

Here are some shots from the photoshoot we did with Glen Ellen Star for their website and marketing with Gordon Lazzarone. And yes, we got to sample some of the “models.”

Get ready to start drooling…

We are thrilled to attend their private opening night on Thursday! Stay tuned for pictures.

If you ever get to Sonoma take the 10 minute drive to Glen Ellen (and don’t blink or you’ll miss it) and dine with Ari and Erinn!
