A walking map of a small district with big ideas
The R St corridor has undergone a transformation. It has reinvented itself from historic corridor, once full of warehouses, rails, and shipping containers, into a hip, urban-arts neighborhood. New businesses are clamoring for the opportunity to be included with the restaurants, coffee shops, bars, salons (even a bar + salon), all surrounding the Warehouse Artist Lofts (WAL).
We were approached by the R St Partnership to create a map of the corridor. Drawing inspiration from the corridor’s modern artistic vibes and the historic scenery of the area we decided it would be best to hand-illustrate the map. Signature buildings, landmarks, and locals were photographed and then carefully drawn over a months long period. The end result is an illustrative, playful, walking-map of the area. It serves as a guide for tourists and locals alike.
Sketching is a big part of our process for any project, so it was fun to develop these into fleshed-out illustrations. Below are examples of some of the sketches we used for the final map.
